ReefTracker ("the app") is an offline-first application for tracking reef aquarium water parameters. This policy explains how the app handles your information. In short: the developer does not collect, receive, or share your aquarium data. If you enable optional cloud backup, the app uploads a copy only to your own Google Drive or iCloud Drive. Optional hardware features communicate directly with equipment on your local network.
None. The app does not collect any personal information. It has no user accounts, no login, and no servers. All data you enter – such as your tanks, water parameter readings, and settings – is stored locally on your device. The only copies that can exist anywhere else are backups in your own accounts – the optional Google Drive or iCloud backup and the Android system backup described below – never anything held by the developer.
Your data is used solely to provide the app's features on your device (recording readings, showing history and graphs, and calculating values). It never leaves your device unless you choose to export it yourself or enable the optional Google Drive or iCloud backup described below.
The app does not send your aquarium data to the developer. It contains no third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs. The only third-party transmission of that data is the backup you explicitly enable to your own Google Drive or iCloud Drive, as described below.
The app lets you create backup files of your data. These files are created and stored where you choose (for example, your device storage or a location you share them to). You are in full control of any backup file you create, and the app does not upload it anywhere unless you enable the Google Drive or iCloud backup described below.
On Android, you can optionally connect the app to your Google account to keep backups of your data in your own Google Drive. This feature is off by default and only works after you explicitly sign in and turn it on. When enabled:
The app's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
On iPhone, you can optionally have the app keep backups of your data in your own iCloud Drive. This feature is off by default and only works after you turn it on in the app's Settings → Backup & Restore. When enabled:
On Android, the operating system itself backs up app data to the Google account signed in on the device, as it does for most apps ("Android Auto Backup"). This backup is created and managed by Android, not by the app, and follows your device's backup settings – you can turn it off for the whole device under Android's Settings → Google → Backup. The copy goes only to your own Google account, where Android uses it to restore your data when you reinstall the app or move to a new phone; the developer has no access to it. Passwords for aquarium equipment that the app stores (such as a Neptune Apex controller login) are excluded from this backup and never leave your device.
The app can use your device's camera for one optional feature: scanning the display of a Hanna pocket checker to read a measurement without typing it. The camera is used only while you are on the scan screen, recognition runs entirely on your device, and no photos are stored or uploaded – only the numeric reading you confirm is saved, locally, like any other reading. If you never use the scan feature, the camera is never accessed.
The app can optionally connect to a Hanna Lab photometer over Bluetooth to run measurements and import results. Bluetooth is used only when you initiate a connection, and the measurements received are stored locally on your device like any other reading. On older Android versions (Android 11 and below), the system requires the location permission for Bluetooth scanning; the app does not determine, store, or transmit your location.
The app can optionally connect to aquarium equipment on your own Wi-Fi network – ReefFactory meters, Red Sea ReefBeat devices (including ReefControl Lite/Pro), and Neptune Apex controllers – to read their values, and can search your local network for such devices when you tap Add. All of this happens directly between your phone and the equipment on your own network: nothing is relayed through a cloud service and nothing is sent to the developer. Readings you choose to save become part of your local measurement history. Wall display also keeps short-lived, display-only graph samples locally for up to 48 hours; they are never added to your measurement history or uploaded on their own. The login for an Apex controller is kept only on your phone and is sent only to your own controller; it is excluded from every kind of backup (see above). On iOS, using this feature triggers the system's Local Network permission prompt. If you never add a device, the app never accesses your local network.
Once per launch, the app may ask the platform store whether a newer version is available. Android uses Google Play's in-app update service; iPhone checks the public App Store listing and opens it only if you choose to update. No aquarium data is included in these requests, failures are ignored, and the app continues to work offline.
All local data lives on your device for as long as you keep it there, except Wall display's device samples, which are automatically pruned after 48 hours. You can delete any of it at any time inside the app, and uninstalling the app removes all of its data from your device. Backup files you created remain wherever you stored them until you delete them; backups in your Google Drive or iCloud Drive can be deleted from there at any time. If the Android system backup is enabled, its copy remains in your own Google account under Android's backup policy so that a reinstall can restore it – you can manage or delete it through your device's backup settings. Because the developer holds no copy of your data, there is nothing further to request deletion of.
The app only requests device permissions needed for features you use: saving or sharing backup files at your request, showing reminder notifications if you set reminders, the camera if you scan a checker's display, Bluetooth if you connect a Hanna meter, and local network access if you connect aquarium devices on your Wi-Fi (see above). It does not access your contacts or microphone.
The app does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children, because it does not collect information at all.
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this same address with a new "Last updated" date.
